Happy 50th Anniversary!

While I was in Holland this summer, I found out that my aunt and uncle would soon be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. Well, today's the big day, so from all of us here in Spain, Happy Anniversary!

Their story began in Wirdum, a small Friesian village in the North of Holland, where my mother's family lived (to see some great pictures of this lovely village visit the Beeldbank Leeuwarden, and type in "Wirdum"). A young man named Wiebe moved to the village to take up a position as a teacher. He met Jelly (my mother's older sister) while ice skating on the canals one winter, they fell in love, and the rest is history. They were married on the 27th of August, 1957, and they have made it through half a century of "For better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health", 5 children, and 12 grandchildren...Now that's some achievement!

Here's a picture I found at my mom's house, of them in front of the church where they were married.

And here's a picture we took of them this summer, almost 50 years later in front of the same church.

Congratulations on 50 years together, and we wish you many more in the future!

  1. Happy Anniversary Wiebe and Jelly from your sister Henny! I remember that day well, I was 15 and got to wear high heels for the first time and Jelly made my dress. Great Theresa, those pictures and I also love the pictures of the beeldbank in Leeuwarden.

  2. That was well done. happy anniversary to a couple that looks just as happy and content after 50 years. I like the imagery and the befor eand after shot of infront of their church. Beautiful!

  3. Oh, how cool!!! I love this post to no end. First, because it's good to know of a couple who has been together 50 years. Wow!
Second, I love old pictures of someone, followed by new pictures of the same place/people years later. Thanks for sharing and say congrats to your aunt and uncle from your blogging buddies!

  4. Are your Friesian relatives all like 8' tall, like mine?

  5. Is it possible your uncle was 14 when they got married?

    I'm jus' sayin'.

They are adorable, and I am ALL OVER any couple that meets whilst ice skating on the canals.

  6. Fifty years? That's a long time. I'll be happy if I live until I'm 50, let alone be married that long. And great pics!

  7. Mem: Glad you liked it, and I hope Oom Wiebe and Tante Jelly did too.

Minka: I really liked the before and after photos too, and I hope someday I'll be able to do the same.

    L'├ępouse : They are, aren't they?

Pavel: It is cool to see two people together after 50 years, not too many can claim to have achieved that.

Diesel: Yeah, I'm 8' tall too, didn't I tell you? (I'm pure Friesian myself) ;)

Jocelyn: Well, if my uncle was 14 then my aunt must have been around 9 or 10 ;) They do look young to be celebrating 50 years, don't they?

Dorky Dad: If you keep eating Fair food I don't know if you'll make it to 50 - you'd better swear off those deep fried candy bars ;)

  8. lovely! a belated Congratulations on 50 years well spent to this wonderfully charming -- and clearly happy couple! : ) xox
